Curriculum Used- 6th Grade

For sixth grade we went with a classical education. I wanted him to be able to draw his own conclusions. We covered a lot of ground, and not once did I wonder if it was enough. Looking back, some would certainly say it was too much. And maybe it was, but I don't think it was. And most importantly, neither did he.

Bible: We used Classical Academic Press' God's Great Covenant; starting with Old Testament 1, went through Old Testament 2, and got through most of New Testament 1.

Math: I chose to go with a tried and true curriculum. I knew there would be no floundering or wondering to their effectiveness here.

Language Arts: For L.A. we also used a tired and true curriculum. I trust these mostly because they are the curriculum that I used as a kid in private school and then later in my own homeschool years.

Science &Heatlh: Biology For the Logic Stage is a classical method curriculum. I absolutely love this science line. The mom that wrote this curriculum is a scientist herself by-trade. There are also more traditional curriculums penned by this author- you may be familiar with the series of Sassafras Science; both can be found at the the Elemental Science website.

For health, I went with Horizons Health. It is well put together, and effective in getting the message to middle schoolers. However, it was not my favorite simply because it does not provide as much detail in the teachers edition on what & where the corresponding material is found in the student book & workbook. Page numbers and such, I would have greatly appreciated. Instead, I had to go hunting for the page numbers; or when my eldest would ask for them- I just simply didn't have any clue. All in all, that's my only complaint.

History: Curious Historian from Classical Academic Press is as the name states: a classical curriculum. But is absolutely beautiful. And I beg of you not to be intimidated by the thickness of the student books. This newly published curriculum likens to DK and Usborne in its visuals. This is the curriculum that turned a science & math kid into a history lover. This is the stuff that homeschool dreams are made of. (At least mine anyways).

Now with that being said, this curriculum begins at a fourth grade level, and each numbered level is meant to last a year. Book 1A/1B being fall & spring semesters respectively. 2A is about a 5th grade level, and 2B has yet to be released at the time of this posting.

Literature & Geography:

Read with the Best was wonderful! I love the ease of the instructions and the book list was well loved by my kiddo. He enjoyed each of the books required of this guide.

Memorial Press is also classical curricula. I picked this up just to make sure he had at least a basic understanding of geography and the countries around the world. We were elbow deep in the pandemic and virtual schooling when his 4th grade covered world geography and he had very little recollection of any of it.
